Psalm 78:23-29

New International Version

²³Yet he gave a command to the skies above
    and opened the doors of the heavens;^(A)
²⁴he rained down manna^(B) for the people to eat,
    he gave them the grain of heaven.
²⁵Human beings ate the bread of angels;
    he sent them all the food they could eat.
²⁶He let loose the east wind^(C) from the heavens
    and by his power made the south wind blow.
²⁷He rained meat down on them like dust,
    birds^(D) like sand on the seashore.
²⁸He made them come down inside their camp,
    all around their tents.
²⁹They ate till they were gorged—^(E)
    he had given them what they craved.

Exodus 13:3-10

³Then Moses said to the people, “Commemorate this day, the day you came out of Egypt,^(A) out of the land of slavery, because the Lord brought you out of it with a mighty hand.^(B) Eat nothing containing yeast.^(C) ⁴Today, in the month of Aviv,^(D) you are leaving. ⁵When the Lord brings you into the land of the Canaanites,^(E) Hittites, Amorites, Hivites and Jebusites^(F)—the land he swore to your ancestors to give you, a land flowing with milk and honey^(G)—you are to observe this ceremony^(H) in this month: ⁶For seven days eat bread made without yeast and on the seventh day hold a festival^(I) to the Lord. ⁷Eat unleavened bread during those seven days; nothing with yeast in it is to be seen among you, nor shall any yeast be seen anywhere within your borders. ⁸On that day tell your son,^(J) ‘I do this because of what the Lord did for me when I came out of Egypt.’ ⁹This observance will be for you like a sign on your hand^(K) and a reminder on your forehead^(L) that this law of the Lord is to be on your lips. For the Lord brought you out of Egypt with his mighty hand.^(M) ¹⁰You must keep this ordinance^(N) at the appointed time^(O) year after year.

Matthew 16:5-12

New International Version

The Yeast of the Pharisees and Sadducees

⁵When they went across the lake, the disciples forgot to take bread. ⁶“Be careful,” Jesus said to them. “Be on your guard against the yeast of the Pharisees and Sadducees.”^(A)

⁷They discussed this among themselves and said, “It is because we didn’t bring any bread.”

⁸Aware of their discussion, Jesus asked, “You of little faith,^(B) why are you talking among yourselves about having no bread? ⁹Do you still not understand? Don’t you remember the five loaves for the five thousand, and how many basketfuls you gathered?^(C) ¹⁰Or the seven loaves for the four thousand, and how many basketfuls you gathered?^(D) ¹¹How is it you don’t understand that I was not talking to you about bread? But be on your guard against the yeast of the Pharisees and Sadducees.” ¹²Then they understood that he was not telling them to guard against the yeast used in bread, but against the teaching of the Pharisees and Sadducees.^(E)
